The Greatest Go on Earth - Standard Oil Company Advertising Paper Clown Mask (1940s)
A striking piece of advertising ephemera from the 1940s, this large Standard Oil Company clown mask was distributed as part of the company’s promotional campaign “The Greatest Go on Earth.” These masks were given away at gas stations and community events to entertain children while subtly building brand loyalty for Standard Oil during the golden age of roadside promotions.
The bold design features a wide red grin, bright blue eyes, oversized ears of orange clown hair, and the slogan “The Greatest Go on Earth” emblazoned across the forehead—making this not only a playful children’s mask but also a direct advertising artifact. At 13 inches tall, it’s a substantial display piece, and the unpunched condition of this example makes it especially desirable.
Survivors are few, as most were quickly used, worn, and discarded. Today, they serve as a quirky crossover collectible appealing to both vintage mask enthusiasts and petroliana collectors who seek branded advertising items beyond the usual signs and oil cans.
